10 Face Yoga Exercises for a Natural Face Lift
Your face has more than 40 muscles. Here's the 5-minute training plan, no tools, no cost, no excuses.
Why train facial muscles at all?
With age, faces lose muscle tone and volume, and skin that used to sit on firm scaffolding starts to drape. Face yoga applies the logic of resistance training to that scaffolding: controlled contractions, isometric holds, progressive consistency. A small 2018 Northwestern University study found that 20 weeks of daily facial exercise left middle-aged women looking, on average, almost three years younger by dermatologist rating. Not a miracle, a training effect.
Two rules before you start: never crease while you train (your fingers act as resistance and smoothers at once), and consistency beats intensity, five minutes daily outperforms an ambitious Sunday session.
Forehead & brows
Forehead
1 · The Palm Press
8 reps · 10-second holds
Place both palms flat across your forehead, anchoring the skin. Try to raise your eyebrows against that resistance and hold. The frontalis learns to lift without folding the skin above it.
Frown lines
2 · The Eleven Smoother
8 reps · 5-second holds
Place a fingertip of each hand between your brows, gently holding the skin smooth. Now try to frown against your fingers, then consciously release. You're unlearning the clench that carves the "elevens".
Eyes
Eye area
3 · The V-Lift
10 reps · 3-second holds
Make a V with your index and middle fingers at the outer and inner corners of each eye. Squint your lower lids upward, you should feel the lower-eye muscle work, then relax. Targets under-eye hollowing and crow's-feet tension.
Eyes & brows
4 · The Wide Gaze
6 reps · 10-second holds
Open your eyes as wide as you can without raising your eyebrows (hold them still with light fingertips at first). Trains the eye-opening muscles to work without recruiting your forehead.
Cheeks & mid-face
Cheeks
5 · The Cheek Lifter
10 reps · 5-second holds
Smile with your lips closed, then place your fingertips lightly on the tops of your cheeks and lift the cheek muscles up toward your eyes, as if smiling with your under-eyes. Hold, release slowly.
Mid-face
6 · The Balloon
5 rounds
Fill your cheeks with air and pass the air slowly from one cheek to the other, five seconds each side. Old-school, slightly silly, quietly effective for cheek muscle endurance.
Jaw, jowls & lips
Jowls
7 · The Jaw Jut
8 reps · 10-second holds
Sitting tall, push your lower jaw slightly forward and lift your chin about 20°. You'll feel the muscles under the jaw engage. Hold, return slowly. Do not crane your neck back.
Jaw & neck
8 · The Tongue Press
10 reps · 5-second holds
Press the whole flat of your tongue firmly against the roof of your mouth, then slowly swallow. Engages the deep muscles under the chin, the area most exercises miss entirely.
Lips & mouth
9 · The O–E Stretch
15 slow reps
Exaggerate the vowels "O" and "E", moving slowly and deliberately between them, keeping the rest of the face relaxed. Works the ring muscle around the mouth that supports lip fullness.
Neck
Neck
10 · The Slow Neck Curl
6 reps
Lying on your back, curl just your head up as if beginning a tiny crunch, chin toward chest, shoulders down, then lower with control over five seconds. The platysma is the most neglected anti-aging muscle you own.
Your 5-minute daily circuit
Morning (with your coffee brewing): Palm Press ×8 → V-Lift ×10 → Cheek Lifter ×10 → Jaw Jut ×8 → Tongue Press ×10. That's it. Rotate the remaining five exercises in whenever you have an extra two minutes.
Make it stick
- Anchor it to an existing habit, coffee brewing, shower warming up, evening podcast.
- Photograph week 0, same light, same angle, no smile. Compare at week 8, not day 4.
- Pair with the rest of the natural stack, face taping handles your muscles at night, face yoga trains them by day, gua sha keeps fluid moving.
